Why Do Special Needs Patients Require A Special Needs Dentist?

    • Poor oral hygiene due to lack of ability for self-care may have serious health implications in persons with disabilities.
    • Special diets of pureed foods stick to the teeth and medications sweetened with syrup or sugar contribute to tooth decay.
    • Children with special needs need healthy teeth and gingiva to aid in speech development and allow the child to foods.
    • Oral trauma to the face and mouth occur more frequently in people with special needs because of poor muscle coordination or seizures.
    • Poor motor coordination such as with Cerebral Palsy inhibits the natural cleansing ability of the tongue, lips and cheeks.
    • Some medications such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antipsychotics and attention enhancers have adverse orofacial reactions.  The adverse reactions include:  dry mouth (xerostomia), gingival overgrowth (gingival hyperplasia), gum disease, dysphagia tongue edema and facial edema.
    • The chronic problems of aging such as heart disease, lung disorders, arthritis and type II diabetes may manifest themselves 15 to 20 years sooner in the person with disabilities

Generally, we treat patients from their birth to the time they turn 18 – but for patients with special needs, we're always happy to make an exception and treat them into adulthood. At our office, the patient comes first, and if they feel most comfortable with us, we are more than happy to continue treating them and have the necessary expertise to provide comprehensive care for them well into adulthood.

    Respect is Our Highest Priority

At our office, there's one thing we enshrine above all else – respect. We respect every patient equally, working with them through a compassionate, loving, and nurturing framework. No matter what disability, set of behaviors, or comfort level is present, we'll work calmly and patiently with our patients to help them feel fully comfortable through every stage of the treatment process so they can develop a beautiful, healthy smile that will last a lifetime. At our office, patients always come first – and that's doubly true for patients with special needs.
