Early Orthodontic Treatment Wheaton

Timing is everything, especially when it comes to your child’s orthodontic health. Just like you know to schedule your child’s first dental appointment by age one, or first tooth eruption for the most effective preventive care, your child should receive orthodontic attention early as well.

When is it Time for an Orthodontic Evaluation?

Our orthodontist follows the recommendation set by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). We encourage all of our DPD Rockstars to receive their first orthodontic checkup by age 7.

The AAO believes age 7 is the optimal time for an orthodontic evaluation because that is when most children have enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to make an accurate assessment of the teeth and jaw.

You can expect one of three outcomes from your child's early orthodontic evaluation at DPD Smiles:

  1. Your child’s teeth and jaw look healthy and aligned, so no treatment is expected to become necessary
  2. The orthodontist notices signs of potential misalignment, so periodic check-ups are needed to monitor the face and jaw over time
  3. A problem exists that should receive orthodontic treatment immediately

If your child’s orthodontic evaluation reveals that immediate treatment is needed, don’t worry. Our DPD Smiles’ orthodontic expert uses cutting-edge techniques and technologies to keep your child safe and comfortable through every procedure.

Why Early Orthodontic Treatment is Essential

The goal of early orthodontic treatment is to eliminate the cause of a developing problem. This makes it possible to guide the growth of facial and jaw bones without the threat of orthodontic complications. Early orthodontic treatment also makes more room for incoming permanent teeth.

Our Wheaton orthodontist may recommend early treatment for the following problems, even if your child still has some baby teeth remaining:

  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Overcrowding
  • Excessively spaced teeth
  • Extra or missing teeth
  • An abnormal bite
  • Thumb-, finger-, or pacifier-sucking that is harming teeth or jaw growth

Early orthodontic treatment for these issues can take many different forms, from a removable retainer or spacers to teeth extraction. Regardless of the method, it’s always our goal to correct orthodontic problems as early and efficiently as possible.
